PEONY SPIRIT

Peony is a flower usually associated with wealth and prosperity‘ Peony is also the national flower of our country. We choose the name “Peony” to represent the spirit of our mission because of the positive image the flower carries.

We believe that, in whatever adverse situation, there is always some kind of element, some form of energy, no matter how little or how small, in every person like a flower bud.

We devote our efforts with a loving heart to care for and help them improve and enhance self-confidence, a positive attitude, and let them share skills to cope with challenges in life so that they would grow with their own efforts and one day blossom as beautiful as a peony.

We emphasize on innovative and hand-holding support and guidance.

Activities
TEACHER ENHANCEMENT PROGRAM
The Foundation believes that the power of education can change the lives of our next generation. Since a teacher teaches many students every year and from year to year, the Foundation emphasizes the quality of teachers because this would have an impact on many more schools, teachers, and students. The English Enhancement Programme (the “Programme”) was launched upon an invitation by the Xian Government in 2008 to assist in English level generally in school in Xian. Since then, the Foundation led the Programme for five years in Xian’s five major regions.

The Foundation helped the teachers by improving their listening and speaking skills through phonic correction, instilling confidence to speak English, and providing an opportunity to conduct lessons all in English through demonstration classes.

With the help of many enthusiastic volunteers over the years, more than 300 teachers went through the Programme. In the hope that those who have been trained will carry on the light, the Foundation selected a few outstanding teachers in the past and conducted sessions of “Train the Trainers”. They will carry on with our mission in various communities in their network, in their city, and in their province.

In addition to the efforts our enthusiastic volunteers have put in, the Foundation is also grateful for donations in—kind such as English books and dictionaries from corporate sponsors.
SUPPORTING MUSIC AS A HERITAGE
Music is proven to be good for personal health and development. Our voice, in particular, is the best instrument because it is with us all the time.

The Foundation encourages music education in schools. The first was the motivation of the Canadian International School of Hong Kong in the development
of a heritage of music.

The Foundation has supported and sponsored the following school-based music programs:
  • Student-production of musicals at Canadian International School of Hong Kong
  • Annual school concert of the University of Hong Kong, School of Professional and Continuing Education (HKU SPACE)
  • Activities organize by Music Farm to encourage more kids and adults to learn music through different activities.
  • Matching Fund Scheme” organized by The Hong Kong Arts Development Council. Bel Canto provides a music event as a platform for young singers to perform, hence building confidence and experience.
  • Bel Canto Singers Foundation Music Concerts
MENTORSHIP
Since 2011, the Foundation has participated in the Mentorship Programme organised by HKU SPACE Community College. The school provides mainly knowledge based learning, while the Foundation supplements with skills in learning, memory, retention, and knowledge application, know-how.

The Foundation has adopted “learning through participation” method to widen the mind of young fellows. Activities organised in the past include:
  • Mind map workshop: organisation of ideas and brainstorming
  • Table manners: proper etiquette to dine with a superior or clients
  • Visits to museums and arts institutions: expansion of extra-curricular knowledge
  • Boating: navigation skills and rules of the high seas
  • Golfing: the origin, equipment, game, and etiquette
  • and other activities following the same concept
The Foundation is also sensitive to other challenges the mentees may come across such as emotional, family, and financial issues.

Shoring session of the 2014 Mentorship Programme Inauguration Ceremony

The Foundation and its 2013-2014 mentees were invited on stage to share about their experience in the Programme. They reiterated the importance of guidance on facing challenges and solving problems through mentorship. With these skills and attitude to tackle difficult situations, the mentees will be benefited for life.

Once a mentor, always a mentor. The Foundation maintains close relationship with all our mentees and offers advice and guidance on a stand-by basis. Loans for education and subsistence are available to those in need.

Apart from the HKU SPACE Mentorship Programme, the Foundation has been providing mentorship to teenagers and young adults, streaming from all directions and networks.
